Just back from lovely Ambleside in the Lake District, which appears to built entirely from slate, which as we all know is grey...
A closer look reveals rusty reds, marbled whites, green and blue tinges combining to produce complex layered colour everywhere there's a wall, a roof or a path.
Just south of Little Langdale a short (four miles - short by Lake District standards) walk gives you the option of going round or though the 'Cathedral' slate mine. We went right through to a huge, cavernous chamber and scrambled through to the darkest tunnels (bring your own torch) hewn from the slate, before emerging excited into the daylight on the other side.
