Yves Saint Laurent’s blue and yellow miracle garden
Jacques Majorelle designed and developed the gardens and villa in the 1920/30s. The villa itself, planters and outbuildings feature the boldest cobalt blue on the walls of the villa and around the gardens, combined with pure yellow, orange, terracotta and turquoise sitting as proud as a parrot against the green of the huge cacti, palms and bamboos.
Yves St Laurent and Pierre Bergé fell in love with, then bought and restored the Majorelle in 1980, and St Laurent’s ashes are scattered in the gardens, making it a Mecca for fashionistas from all over the world.

We’ve just enjoyed a whistlestop whirl around Marrakech. A tangle of Arabian, French and African culture, artisan craft and design that can’t fail to inspire and intrigue. After a couple of days alternately relaxing in the luxury of our opulent Riad and losing ourselves in the bustling Souks with their dazzling displays of exotic metalwork, leather, cloth and spices – we headed out of the medieval Medina into the European vibe of the Ville Nouvelle and the oasis of designer calm that is the Majorelle Garden.
